Adolf Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel - Paintings

Adolf Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel, who covered a broad artistic spectrum, is mainly known as a German painter and draftsman of Realism.
Born: 08 December 1815 in Breslau
Died: 09 February 1905 in Berlin
After the death of his father, Adolf von Menzel leads the family enterprise to new pride and prestige with lithographs to a poem by Goethe. He not only produces illustrations for wood engravings but also for oil paintings with historical motifs. Through a trip to Paris, his style changes towards Impressionism. After becoming a member of various European academies, Menzel is awarded the title of professor by the Prussian king. Thus, Menzel's historical paintings, which have hitherto been steeped in the Biedermeier style, now become very detailed and realistic. Also, the industrial achievements of the country offer him good motifs for his pictures. From the 1880s onwards, Adolf von Menzel is overwhelmed with awards and medals and even receives a title of nobility.
