Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, der im Klassizismus, der Folgezeit des Barock, wenig geschätzt wird, gilt heute als der bedeutendste italienische Maler des Spätbarocks.

gestorben am 27. März 1770 in Madrid
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, der bereits in seinem Frühwerk äußerst bekannt und beliebt ist, absolviert seine Lehre bei dem gefragten venezianischen Maler Gregorio Lazzarini. Angelehnt an dessen dunklen Stil zeigen die Figuren seiner ersten Fresken für Kirchen und Adelspaläste noch typisch barocke Gebärden. Thematisch gibt Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in seinen Tafelbildern und Deckenfresken sowohl religiöse als auch mythologisch, allegorische Themen wieder. Durch seinen großen Bekanntheitsgrad bekommt der Künstler, der seine beiden Söhne ebenfalls beschäftigt, Aufträge in den Palästen von Udine, Mailand und Venedig. Am Beispiel seines wohl berühmtesten Werkes: "Die Ausmalung des Treppenhauses der Würzburger Residenz", wird die Veränderung zu einem helleren, fast schon bunten Kolorit in Tiepolos Stil ersichtlich. In der Folgezeit wird der Künstler an den Madrider Hof berufen, um dort unter anderem die Decke des Thronsaales auszumalen, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo erfährt hier aber nicht die künstlerische Vormachtsstellung wie in Italien.
